specific rashes

  • fixed drug eruption - This can look like almost anything - big purple blotches, little red patches, you name it. Unlike hives, it doesn't itch and may only be in certain "fixed" spots.   Certain drugs are famous for causing it, but almost anything can do it.  

  • pityriasis rosea - This is a fairly common rash that doesn't usually itch very much but lasts longer than expected (4-8 weeks).  Patients usually come in after a few weeks because of persistence rather than symptoms.
